Christopher Jackson will reprise his Tony-nominated role as George Washington in Hamilton starting Sept. 8 through Jan. 3, 2027

Jackson's return marks a "deeply meaningful homecoming" inspired by the musical's 10th anniversary milestone in 2025

Lin-Manuel Miranda originally envisioned Jackson for the role, with producers calling his return a special moment for the show

Here comes the general — again! Christopher Jackson is heading home to Hamilton!

The Grammy and Emmy winner, 50, will return to Broadway this fall to reprise his Tony Award-nominated role as George Washington in Lin-Manuel Miranda's blockbuster musical, he announced during an appearance on the Today show on Tuesday, June 16.

"I am going back!" said Jackson, who was an original cast member in Hamilton and helped launch the show both Off-Broadway and on Broadway.

The musical, running now at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, celebrated its 10th anniversary in August 2025. That milestone, turns out, is what inspired Jackson's desire to do the show "one last time."

"Last year being the 10 year anniversary, I started to get the itch," he said on Today. "There are few opportunities that you get to have that give you a chance to really dig in. And it's a lot of new people, but same old building — my favorite building in New York. So I'm super excited about it."

Jackson's limited engagement return run in Hamilton begins Sept. 8 and continues through Jan. 3, 2027. He follows in the footsteps of cast mate Leslie Odom, Jr., who returned to Hamilton last fall, selling out his limited engagement.

Though Jackson has performed the show on Broadway for over a year, he joked on Today that he's going to need some rehearsal to get all his lines down again. "It's out of my mind, but I've got a little time," he joked. "And I've done it a few times."

Jackson earned a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for originating the role of America's first president, and also won a Grammy as a principal soloist on the original Broadway cast recording.

Beyond Hamilton, the Jackson's stage credits include In the Heights, The Lion King, Memphis, After Midnight, Bronx Bombers, Holler If Ya Hear Me and Hell's Kitchen. He was most recently on the boards in Celebrity Autobiography.

On screen, the actor is known for roles in Bull, And Just Like That…, When They See Us, The Good Wife, Person of Interest, A Gifted Man, Nurse Jackie and more. His film credits include Hamilton on Disney+, In the Heights, Moana, Tracers, and Afterlife of the Party.

As a songwriter and composer, Jackson won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Song for "What I Am," written for Sesame Street with Bill Sherman.

In a statement shared with PEOPLE, Jackson called his return " deeply meaningful homecoming."

"This show changed my life, and it remains one of the great honors of my career to be part of telling this story. To step back into this room, with this company and this audience, is something I will never take for granted."

Producer Jeffrey Seller said Jackson's return is especially meaningful because Miranda originally envisioned him for the role. "Lin-Manuel wrote George Washington with Chris's gorgeous voice and musicality in his head," Seller said. "How lucky are we that we get to experience his George Washington one last time?"

Hamilton began performances on Broadway in July 13, 2015, officially opening on Aug. 6 of that year.

With a score blending hip-hop, jazz, R&B and traditional Broadway sounds, Miranda's masterpiece went on to become one of the most acclaimed musicals in theater history, earning Tony, Grammy and Olivier Awards as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors.
