Days after being captured by U.S. forces in a surprise overnight attack, Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro is expected to make his first appearance in a New York federal courthouse on Monday, Jan. 5. Maduro is set to be arraigned in Manhattan alongside his wife on a four-count indictment linking them to a 25-year narco-terrorism conspiracy.
Maduro arrived in Manhattan on Monday morning, shackled as he stepped off a helicopter. The video shows the leader walking down a platform, flanked by armed officials on either side, before entering a vehicle.
The Venezuelan leader and his wife, Cilia Flores, were both captured by U.S. forces on Saturday, Jan. 3. The two reached the United States after being helicoptered out of Venezuelan airspace, sailing to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba via a U.S. Navy ship and then flying to New York by plane.
