Scooby-Doo: Origins, a live-action series, will premiere on Netflix in 2027

A real-life Great Dane puppy will play Scooby-Doo in the new show

Like, Zoinks! Scooby-Doo is back — and he's trading CGI for four very real paws.

The beloved mystery-solving Great Dane first debuted in 1969 in the animated series Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears. Alongside Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley and his best friend, Shaggy Rogers, Scooby spent decades unmasking supposedly supernatural villains while winning over generations of fans with his goofy charm, insatiable appetite and signature catchphrases.

Over the years, the franchise has inspired numerous spinoffs and adaptations, including the hit 2002 live-action film Scooby-Doo, starring Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, Linda Cardellini and Neil Fanning as the voice of Scoob. The movie, which brought the animated canine to life through CGI, was followed by 2004's Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.

Now, Netflix is taking the franchise in a new direction with Scooby-Doo: Origins, the first live-action Scooby-Doo television series. The upcoming show, premiering in 2027, will explore how Scooby and the Mystery Inc. gang first came together — and this time, the iconic pup won't be animated or computer-generated. Instead, Scooby will be played by a real-life Great Dane puppy.

Here, take a look at how the new Scooby-Doo: Origins cast compares to the original 2000s stars.

Maxwell Jenkins will step into the role of Fred, the brave and dependable leader of Mystery Inc., whom Prinze Jr. portrayed in the 2002 and 2004 live-action films.

Known for his blond hair and signature white-and-blue outfit, Fred is often the brawn behind the gang's plans.

After his casting was announced in March 2026, Jenkins celebrated the news on Instagram, writing, "So grateful for the opportunity."

Tanner Hagen will take on the role of Shaggy, Scooby-Doo's best friend and constant companion. Originally portrayed by Lillard, the laid-back mystery solver is known for his scruffy appearance, enormous appetite and tendency to run from danger — usually with Scooby right behind him.

"ZOINKS! Like ... is this even life? So incredibly grateful to be stepping into the shoes of the iconic Shaggy Rogers in the upcoming Netflix live-action series!" Hagen wrote on Instagram in March 2026. "Thank you to everyone who has helped me get here. See you soon gang!"

Gellar famously portrayed Daphne, the stylish and adventurous member of Mystery Inc. Now, Mckenna Grace is stepping into the role — and has already traded her signature blonde locks for Daphne's iconic red hair.

"Oh my jeepers. I can't believe life is real. I could cry all over again just looking at this announcement. So thankful, SO excited," the actress wrote on Instagram in February 2026 following her casting announcement.

After Cardellini brought Velma to life in the 2002 and 2004 live-action films, Abby Ryder Fortson is taking over as Mystery Inc.'s resident genius in Netflix's Scooby-Doo: Origins.

Easily recognizable by her orange turtleneck and thick-rimmed glasses, Velma is known for her quick wit, keen eye for detail and ability to solve even the trickiest mysteries.

Fortson celebrated her casting on Instagram in March 2026, writing, "JINKIES!! Excited to go solve some mysteries with the gang! So honoured to be the next to wear that iconic turtleneck."

Fanning famously voiced Scooby-Doo, who was brought to life through CGI, in the 2002 and 2004 live-action films.

For decades, the lovable Great Dane has charmed fans with his goofy personality, enormous appetite and signature catchphrases, including "Ruh-roh!"

Now, Scooby-Doo: Origins is taking a different approach, with the iconic canine trading digital effects for four real paws as a real-life Great Dane puppy steps into the role.
