“I was doing the best I knew to protect my family," she said in a Rolling Stone interview published on Saturday, Dec. 20

Weezer bassist Scott Shriner's estranged wife Jillian Lauren-Shriner has broken her silence following the Los Angeles Police Department shooting incident that occurred in April.

In an interview with Rolling Stone published on Saturday, Dec. 20, Lauren-Shriner, 52, opened up about being shot by police during a manhunt where officers were searching for three suspects allegedly involved in a hit-and-run who had fled to the Shriners' residential neighborhood.

At the time, Lauren-Shriner, who had no involvement in the hit-and-run, was armed and fired her weapon at an officer while in a backyard, leading to her arrest. She was then released from custody on a $1 million bond.

“My world fell to pieces around me in a heartbeat,” Lauren-Shriner told Rolling Stone of the aftermath. “It’s like, you spend your whole life just getting an entire deck of cards in order. And just take them and throw them up in the air one day, and I’m still waiting to see how they’re gonna land.”

She noted that she was "doing the best I knew to protect my family."

"[The] impulse was self-defense," Lauren-Shriner said.

Following her arrest in April, she focused on memorizing the graffiti on the walls of her jail cell.

“It gave me a chance to get out of my head for those hours in the jail cell and imagine who else had been there,” said Lauren-Shriner.

While she initially said she wouldn't do a book about her experience, she's shifted her perspective. "Books are what I do," said Lauren-Shriner.

Earlier this month, Lauren-Shriner filed for divorce from Shriner, 60, after two decades of marriage, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for her filing, per legal documents obtained by PEOPLE.

The former couple married in November 2005 in Hawaii and share sons Jovanni Starshine, 13, and Tariku Moon, 17.

Lauren-Shriner is seeking joint legal and physical custody, spousal support and requested that the court's ability to award Shriner spousal support be terminated. She also requested that Shriner pay her attorney fees and that her last name be restored to Lauren.

In the months prior to filing for divorce, Lauren-Shriner announced via Instagram in March that she was diagnosed with cancer, and she later shared that she had two back-to-back surgeries, including a full hysterectomy.

Lauren-Shriner addressed her divorce while speaking with Rolling Stone, noting that the incident with the police created a new "crisis" point between her and Shriner.

“I had to go back and work on trauma from a long time ago in order to try and understand myself now, my actions,” she told the outlet, adding that she wants to be her "best self" amid the divorce.

Lauren-Shriner added that "the headlines about the divorce were the ones that really hurt me."

“I was the one who served my husband, but still, to see it in the public was really painful. It was definitely a day [spent] under the covers, blocking out all the noise. Divorce is painful, I don’t care who you are," she said.

On April 8, Lauren-Shriner was shot by police near her and Shriner's home in Los Angeles' Eagle Rock neighborhood. A manhunt had been underway for three suspects allegedly involved in a hit-and-run who fled to the Shriners' neighborhood at the time.

While Lauren-Shriner had no involvement in the hit-and-run, she was armed and fired her weapon at an officer while in a backyard, police said.

“She repeatedly ignored police commands to disarm and that she fired her weapon at LAPD officers,” LAPD spokesperson Jennifer Forkish told PEOPLE at the time.

Lauren-Shriner was then shot once in the shoulder by a responding officer and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. She was then booked on an attempted murder charge before being released from custody on a $1 million bond.

Later, instead of the murder charge, Lauren-Shriner was charged with the lesser offense of assault and negligent discharge of a firearm and was granted a diversion program instead of jail for mental health issues, per court documents obtained by PEOPLE.
