Prince William and Kate Middleton’s Recent Family Outing Proves This Challenge Is “Finally Behind Them”

Prince William and Kate Middleton attended the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland on August 1.
Alongside them were their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—marking the children’s first official engagement in Scotland.
The “snapshot of family happiness” shows that the family has officially “come out the other side” of a difficult season, royal biographer Robert Jobson said.
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, and this one certainly is—a shot of the Wales family of five enjoying themselves at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland on August 1. It marked not only Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis’s first official engagement in Scotland—and Louis’s first official engagement at a sporting event—but also, as royal biographer Robert Jobson put it, proof that the “hardest year of their lives” is “finally behind them.”

It was a “snapshot of family happiness” showing Prince William and Kate Middleton had “come out the other side” after the Princess of Wales’s cancer treatment, Jobson told The Daily Mail. The future queen announced her diagnosis in March 2024, and shared in September of that year that she’d completed chemotherapy treatment. In January 2025, she told the public that she is in remission.

Jobson was also moved by the sight of Kate speaking with cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, who has been diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer, noting that the interaction showed the princess’s “realness,” he said. The Princess of Wales was “genuinely engrossed” in the conversation, Jobson added.
The longtime royal reporter noted that George, Charlotte, and Louis’s relaxed nature at the Games “is indicative of just how wonderfully their parents handled an incredibly challenging time,” The Daily Mail reported.

“You see it in the children first,” Jobson said. “George is easy in a crowd. Charlotte talks to strangers and means it. Louis behaves like an 8-year-old, which is the healthiest thing in the picture. None of them carries the wariness you would expect. That is not luck. Their parents did it, and they did it while one of them was ill.”
William, for his part, was a “very proud dad” as he “flashed a smile,” Jobson said, adding of the Princess of Wales, “there is nothing ordinary about Catherine, and every room knows it.”

“She is in remission and she is back at work and clearly enjoying it,” he said.

William and Kate—known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay while in Scotland—are likely headed up to Balmoral with their children imminently. Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond told The Mirror that “The summer stay up there has always been a time primarily for William, Catherine, and the rest of the family to gather in the peace of the Scottish countryside after the busyness and noise of their working lives in London and elsewhere.”
“It’s a ‘breathe, relax, and be still’ kind of place, and that’s what they all love about it,” she added. “Its beauty is undeniable, but the castle really is quite remote—and it’s the sort of place where you have to make your own fun. That, however, is something that generations of the royal family seem very well equipped to do.”
Bond noted that “During this break, I’m sure Catherine will want to make an extra fuss of George as he prepares for the big change in his life—setting off to Eton, where he will become a full-time boarder in September.”

“The Balmoral holiday is an important tradition for the family when quite a lot of them can spend time together away from work, away from the cameras, and very seriously off-duty,” Bond continued. “Generation after generation seem to have fallen under the spell of the castle and its grounds.”
