Meghan Markle celebrated her 45th birthday on Tuesday by giving fans a behind-the-scenes peek at her at-home festivities on Instagram, which featured the family's two beloved dogs.

The amusing clip showed Meghan and Prince Harry attempting, with limited success, to fit small silver party hats onto their black Labrador Pula and beagle Mia.

Neither dog proved especially cooperative. Mia could be seen wriggling about on the floor with the hat crushed underneath her, whilst Pula opted to carry hers around in her mouth instead.

"Oh dear," Harry was heard remarking as Meghan laughed.

In a further attempt, Pula appeared to tolerate the hat for a moment before it slipped during a stretch.

"Let me take it off," Meghan said, laughing. "I'm sorry!"

The couple's canine family has evolved over the years.

Meghan already owned a beagle called Guy when she first met Harry, and the dog relocated with her to Britain before the family moved to California in 2020. Guy passed away in January 2025.

Pula was adopted by the pair shortly before their 2018 wedding, whilst Mia became part of the household in 2022 after being rescued from a breeding and research facility in Virginia through the Beagle Freedom Project.

Meghan had personally contacted the organisation about taking in an older dog.

"The duchess is holding Mia and was like, 'We're adopting her,'" Shannon Keith, a volunteer with the group, told the L.A. Times.

"She was like, 'No, we don't want a Christmas puppy, we want ones we can help who are older.'"

The Duchess of Sussex notably shares her 4 August birthday with the late Queen Mother, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who was born on the same date in 1900 and lived to the age of 101.

In his 2023 memoir Spare, Prince Harry recounted the moment during the summer of 2018 when King Charles discovered the shared birthdate.

"The bond between Meg and Pa, always strong, grew even stronger during that weekend. One night, over pre-dinner cocktails, Fred Astaire playing in the background, it emerged that Meg shared a birthdate with Pa's favourite person: Gan-Gan," Harry wrote. "'Amazing,' Pa said with a smile."

Meghan's lifestyle brand As Ever also marked the occasion, posting a carousel of images on Instagram that included a childhood photograph of the duchess.
