Jacob Latimore reveals the "toughest" scene he's had to film while reminiscing about the drama series' eight-season run

"It was a very fragile moment," Latimore told PEOPLE at The Chi's eighth and final season premiere in New York City on May 13

The Chistar Jacob Latimore bids his farewell to the drama series.

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at The Chi season 8 premiere in New York City on May 13, the actor, 29, who plays Emmett Washington, opens up about the final season of the drama series.

Reminiscing on The Chi's eight seasons, Latimore revealed the scene in the season 7 finale where his mother, Jada (Yolanda Ross), dies from cancer. He describes this heartbreaking moment in the show as the "toughest thing I've ever done."

"I'm really close with my mom," Latimore shares. "I had such a short window [to film it]. With television, we gotta move on to the next scene. So, I only had about 10 to 15 minutes to pour out all that. It took me all day, maybe all week, to get there."

"It was a very fragile moment," he adds. "I think, really, the first take I just let loose and I felt so good afterward."

On the flip side, Latimore said his favorite scene to film was the "fun" house party scene in season 6, where Emmett and Kiesha host a party to celebrate moving into their new home. All their friends come together to enjoy a night of community, dancing and a little bit of drama, of course.

The Chi is a coming-of-age drama series that follows a group of residents on Chicago's South Side, bonded by tragedy and ambition. The Lena Waithe series will conclude its eight-year run with its series finale set to premiere on July 24.

Latimore expressed that he was feeling emotional about the series finale, noting that the cast had wrapped a week before the show's New York premiere.

"This week, it feels really good, and it makes it feel really real," Latimore said. "I've been hearing the voices of my castmates behind me. I'm missing voices all the time, us linking up four, five, six months out of the year."

"We've been crying," he continues. "It's bittersweet, but we're proud of what we've done."

In an interview with PEOPLE, Jason Weaver, who made his debut as Rashaad "Shaad" Marshall in the show's fourth season, also shared that the series finale is an "emotional moment."

"I think this really puts the cherry on top of this beautiful cake that we've baked throughout the course of season 8 and throughout the course of the series," he said.

"These amazing people that I've been blessed and fortunate to work with for the past four seasons truly do mean something to me," Weaver continued. "It goes past just us being cast members. I love all these guys."

New episodes of The Chi will be released every Friday until its series finale on July 24.

The Chi is available to stream on Paramount+.
