Singer Bad Bunny, who hails from Puerto Rico, recently performed the halftime show at Super Bowl 2026, which was subjected to praise as well as criticism from a few, including President Donald Trump. After the Puerto Rican star’s show, fans have taken to social media questioning, ‘Is Puerto Rico part of the United States?’

‘Is Puerto Rico Part of the United States?’ trend explained

Following the Super Bowl halftime show of Bad Bunny, many football fans have taken to social media asking the question ‘Is Puerto Rico part of the United States?’ Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, and all its citizens were regarded as American citizens, based on the Jones-Shafroth Act of 1917.

After Bad Bunny, who was born in Puerto Rico, was announced as the headliner for Super Bowl 2026, many people stormed social media to question his selection. While many critics questioned his status as an American citizen, some also objected to his show in Spanish. Despite the backlash, Bad Bunny became the first artist to sing his entire Super Bowl set in Spanish.

During his set, Bad Bunny also said, “God Bless America,” and listed down the other nations from North, Central, and South America that are a territory of the United States. Behind him, the backup dancers held flags of those nations.

The debate over Puerto Rico being a US territory also fueled after Jake Paul criticized Bad Bunny’s performance in his tweet. Paul wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), “Purposefully turning off the halftime show Let’s rally together and show big corporations they can’t just do whatever they want without consequences (which equals viewership for them) You are their benefit. Realize you have power. Turn off this halftime. A fake American citizen performing who publicly hates America. I cannot support that.”
