The forever-cherished Harry Potter books were once adapted to films, the first three of which benefitting from John Williams — who composed those magical scores.
But for the upcoming HBO series, a different Academy Award winner will provide the music — perhaps only fueling more excitement in terms of what new and unique elements can be brought to the small-screen endeavor.
Hans Zimmer and his Bleeding Fingers Music company are officially set to score the HBO series, Variety reports, a project that's currently in production and set to debut in 2027.
“The musical legacy of Harry Potter is a touch point for composers everywhere and we are humbled to join such a remarkable team on a project of this magnitude,” said Zimmer, 68, and Bleeding Fingers Music composers Kara Talve and Anže Rozman in a statement, per Variety. “The responsibility is something that myself, Kara Talve and Anže Rozman do not take lightly. Magic is all around us, often just beyond reach, but as in the world of Harry Potter, you simply must look for it. With this score we hope to bring audiences that little bit closer to it whilst honoring what has come before.”
As fans of the Oscar-winning music producer are probably aware, Zimmer has scored more than 100 feature films over his decorated career. Some highlights include:
Dune (2021)
Inception (2010)
The Lion King (1994)
Gladiator (2000)
F1 (2025)
The new score for HBO's series will honor the Harry Potter legacy while reimagining its sound for a long-form, prestige TV format, Variety also noted on Thursday, Jan. 15. Each season of the show will focus solely on one J.K. Rowling-penned installment.
Earlier this month, the toy company Basic Fun! revealed a new collection of Care Bear plushies created in collaboration with Warner Bros. to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the franchise’s first film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The 12-inch dolls each wear mascot hoodies in honor of their chosen Hogwarts house, along with matching scarves and house robes.
