Cher is making a return to Saturday Night Live's Studio 8H as a musical guest for the first time in nearly 40 years.

The last time she appeared as a performer on the late-night stage, it was 1987. The host was Candice Bergen, the first female member of SNL's Five Timers Club for hosting the series five times.

Cher performed two songs that evening. The first was "We All Sleep Alone." The second was 'I Found Someone."

"I Found Someone," co-written by Michael Bolton, hit the No. 10 spot on the Billboard charts. The accompanying music video, which featured her then-boyfriend Rob Camilletti, received heavy rotation on MTV. The Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, Desmond Child tune, "We All Sleep Alone," was a No. 14 Billboard chart hit.

Following that initial appearance, Cher returned to SNL two other times in her career. She appeared during a cameo on September 26, 1992, and as a performer during the SNL 50th Anniversary Special, held at Radio City Music Hall. Cher additionally took part in SNL50: The Anniversary Special's "Audience Q&A" with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

"Yes. Cher, you have a question?" Poehler asked. "No, I don't," the singer joked, adding, "I got a lot of answers."

"Cher, we believe, we believe you do," Poehler responded. Fey added, "We will hook up with you after the show."

Cher will be joined by Ariana Grande as host. The episode is Season 51's Christmas special and the final episode of 2025.

While it is unclear whether or not Cher will appear in any sketches during Grande's stint, she has appeared in one SNL sketch prior. She appeared on the show's Weekend Update news segment on September 26, 1992, during the season 18 premiere.

Cher did not perform a song or a traditional comedy sketch. She appeared as herself.

This will be Ariana Grande's third time hosting Saturday Night Live. She previously appeared in 2014 as a musical guest, pulled double duty as a host and musical guest in 2016 and hosted in October 2024.

Saturday Night Live airs at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC.
