Angelina Jolie’s son, Maddox Jolie, is celebrating a milestone: his 25th birthday.
Born in Battambang, Cambodia on Aug. 5, 2001, Maddox spent the first seven months of his life in an orphanage. In 2002, Angelina, who had filmed Lara Croft: Tomb Raider there the year prior, was visiting the orphanage in hopes of adoptions. She found she didn’t “feel a connection” with any of the children until she laid eyes on Maddox.
“They then said, ‘There’s one more baby.’” She saw Maddox lying in a box suspended from the ceiling, she told Vanity Fair in 2017, and knew he was her baby. “I cried and cried,” she revealed. Angelina’s then-partner, Brad Pitt, would also adopt Maddox in 2005.
Decades later, the mother-son duo remain a tight-knit pair and have worked on several projects together. In 2016, 15-year-old Maddox worked as an executive producer on Angelina’s film, First They Killed My Father, an adaptation of Loung Ung‘s book about the Cambodian genocide by the Khmer Rouge regime. The actress told PEOPLE that though he “goes back and forth [to Cambodia] a lot,” working on the film served as more of an immersive experience for Maddox to learn about where he’s from.
The two worked together again when he served as a production assistant on 2024’s Maria and 2026’s Couture, which both starred his mother.
On July 7, Maddox published a legal notice in the Los Angeles Daily Journal confirming his intent to drop “Pitt” from his last name. He is requesting that his full legal name be changed to “Maddox Chivan Jolie,” and has a hearing scheduled for Sept. 14.
